Frontline is a flea and tick protection medication for dogs and is an excellent method for home flea infestations. There are three methods for applying Frontline: Frontline Spray for severe outbreaks, Frontline Topspot for home use to kill adult fleas and the most common, Frontline Plus which is given by applying the medication to the pet’s coat. The active drug, Fipronil, is stored under the dog’s skin in their oil glands and will not wash off when you bathe your pet. The drug is then released when the oil glands are activated and coats the hair follicles of your pet. Frontline for dogs does not wait for fleas or other pests of bite the dog but kills them when they come into contact with the fur. This method is safer than letting the fleas and ticks bite the dog, which can transmit diseases to your pet before the pest is killed.

After you have applied Frontline, it can take up to 24 hours for it to begin to work. Once it does, the fleas will begin to move off of the pet and towards the end of the fur. You will begin to see more fleas as they come to the surface. After this period, any fleas that come into contact with your pet will usually die within 18 hours, however, ticks may take up to two days to die. Frontline will continue to work for up to a month before the medication must be reapplied to continue the protection for your dog.
